Location: Catalina Foothills
Project Description: Considered one of the most architecturally significant homes in Arizona, the Ramada House (1975) is a masterwork by the late Judith Chafee, FAIA. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the residence is defined by its namesake: a massive, 26-foot-tall Douglas fir grid that engineers a constant dialogue between the desert sun and the living space.
After 50 years of exposure to the Sonoran climate, the original structure required a comprehensive replacement. Baer Works was commissioned to execute this sensitive restoration, addressing critical issues where original beams had split and compromised the home’s envelope.
Consulting with Preserve Tucson and the State Historic Preservation Office, the team developed a solution to replace the ramada while introducing a responsible, weather-tight break in the poles bridging the interior and exterior. This approach honors Chafee’s original vision while ensuring the home’s future longevity.
